Every 4-6 weeks I teach an introduction to young adult fiction course at Colorado Free University. In this overview, we explore what makes a novel young adult as well as common misconceptions about the category. YA is exciting for writers because the rules of the genre are not firmly set, creating room for experimentation. The key is learning how to think like a teenager as you explore the internal and external conflicts of adolescence. Some class time is spent reading short examples and discussing what works and working on writing prompts.
I love teaching at Colorado Free University because the students are genuinely interested in the courses they take and my fellow instructors are masters in their fields. To learn more about my course or others offered at CFU click here.
